Hip Resurfacing: Understanding the Transition to Total Hip Replacement

Safety, Science, and Patient-First Care In the evolution of orthopaedic surgery, Hip Resurfacing was once considered a primary choice for younger, active patients. While the procedure offered unique theoretical advantages, modern clinical data and global safety recalls have led us to prioritize Total Hip Arthroplasty as the safer, more reliable standard of care at our center.

The Theoretical Advantages

Hip Resurfacing was designed as a bone-conserving procedure with several key goals:

  • Bone Preservation: Retaining more of the natural femoral head compared to a traditional replacement.
  • Stability: A larger "ball" size virtually eliminated the risk of dislocation.
  • Activity Levels: Aimed at allowing younger patients to return to high-impact sports and heavy labor.

Why We No Longer Offer Hip Resurfacing

Despite its early promise, long-term global data revealed significant risks that moved us to discontinue this option:

  • Adverse Tissue Reactions: Many patients experienced sensitivity and tissue damage caused by the release of metallic ions from the metal-on-metal design.
  • Global Recalls: Following widespread industry recalls and safety alerts, we have prioritized patient safety by transitioning exclusively to high-performance Ceramic-on-Polyethylene or Metal-on-Polyethylene total hip replacements.
  • Predictability: Modern Total Hip Replacement now offers the same (or better) survivorship and activity levels without the risk of metallic ion complications.

If You Already Have a Hip Resurfacing Implant

If you underwent Hip Resurfacing in the past and are currently experiencing:

  • New or worsening hip/groin pain.
  • Swelling around the joint.
  • Difficulty walking or a "clicking" sensation.

I strongly advise you to contact your original operating surgeon for a clinical review. They can perform the necessary blood tests (for metal ion levels) and imaging to ensure your implant remains safe and functional.

The Modern Alternative: The "Mini-Stem" Total Hip

For younger patients who were originally interested in bone preservation, we now utilize High-Performance Total Hip Replacements. These modern designs offer:

  1. Excellent Survivorship: Proven to last 20+ years in active individuals.
  2. Biocompatible Materials: Using ceramic and highly cross-linked polyethylene to eliminate metal-on-metal concerns.
  3. Advanced Stability: Restoring your range of motion safely and permanently.
