Joint Preservation
Joint preservation is the non-surgical treatment of joint degeneration and injuries, such as hip, knee and shoulder pain. Joint preservation uses orthobiologic cellular therapies, such as stem cells and PRP, to repair and restore normal function and as an alternative to joint replacement.
Stem cells are the body’s “master cells” that can develop into many different types of cells and help regenerate or replace damaged cells throughout the body. PRP is a collection of growth factors, platelets, and white blood cells that help promote cartilage health and inhibit the factors that cause cartilage breakdown.
Stem cell therapy and PRP are both biologics that can assist in the regeneration of damaged tissue. However, they are not the same. PRP is not cell therapy but rather a separate treatment option that is explicitly reserved to treat acute, low-grade injuries. Stem cell therapy, on the other hand, can be used to treat various muscle injuries, chronic arthritis, soft tissue damage and back pain. Sometimes, stem cell therapy and PRP are combined to enhance the healing process.
